Benefits of sports massage

Holistic Concepts ·°ºo Sports & InjuryIncreasingly, in today's health orientated environment, more people are incurring injuries through sport, fitness, everyday activities and stress.

Sports massage addresses specific problem areas within the musculoskeletal system. Helping to prevent injuries and aid the rehabilitation of existing injuries by using a combination of stretches, cryotherapy, thermotherapy and various deep tissue massage techniques, such as neuromuscular, muscle energy and soft tissue release to help alleviate pain, stretch and relax muscles and break down scar tissue and adhesions. These techniques also help eliminate metabolic by-products of exercise and help optimise nutrients and oxygen to the muscles

Professional sports people have access to physios when they train; unfortunately the amateur sports enthusiast rarely has the same luxury to treat an injury. If an injury is sustained and professional help isn't sought, then further training can lead to a repetitive strain injury. This type of injury is very common amongst today's fitness enthusiasts.

Anyone can benefit from a sports massage, whether you are an athlete, a fitness fanatic, an occasional jogger or if you have tense, tight, painful muscles. People with more physical jobs can benefit from a sports massage, as can those who spend long periods of time sitting, such as in front a computer. Regular massage can complement a training programme, helping muscles recover quickly after a training or gym session, improving the range of movement of a muscle or joint and improving flexibility. This allows you to become fitter and means there's a reduced chance of injury.

Sports massage is beneficial at any time, however if you frequently partake in exercise sports massage can be used pre, during or post an event or exercise. These sessions are specifically tailored to the clients needs:

  • Pre-event massage is used to compliment a warm up, improve circulation and to reduce muscle tension prior to an event. It can be relaxing or stimulating depending on the need of the recipient.

  • During-event massage is usually used in sports with long rest periods between activity. This is used predominantly to address any specific issues and help prevent the muscles from fatiguing.

  • Post-event massage focuses on reducing muscle tension, cramps, flushing out lactic acid and toxins and helping speed up recovery.
